the Estonian government announced that three Russian fighter jets flew into Estonian airspace for about 12 minutes near Vaindloo Island in the Gulf of Finland
Tallinn City – Friday, September 19, 2025, the Estonian government announced that three Russian fighter jets flew into Estonian airspace for about 12 minutes near Vaindloo Island in the Gulf of Finland. According to the authorities' confirmation, these airplanes turned off the transponder signal, did not submit a flight plan, and did not contact Estonia's air traffic control center.
After discovering this violation, NATO fighter jets were dispatched to expel the Russian airplanes from the airspace.
Estonian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Margus Tsahkna, stated that this violation was a “brazen and intolerable act” and a demonstration of Russia's dangerous policy. While Prime Minister Kristen Michal confirmed that Estonia summoned the Russian diplomatic representative to receive a formal protest.
At the same time, Estonia also demanded that NATO convene according to Article 4 of the NATO Treaty to discuss stability and further defense measures.
This case occurred after several previous reports of false airspace violations in the region, causing concern that tension between Russia and NATO member countries could continue to increase.
