A golden opportunity to apply effective international pressure on Thailand and for Cambodia to gain diplomatic and moral advantages at the international level.

A golden opportunity to apply effective international pressure on Thailand and for Cambodia to gain diplomatic and moral advantages at the international level.

The detention of 18 Cambodian soldiers does not seem to be a simple border incident, but rather a political action used as a negotiation strategy to pressure Cambodia. Thailand appears unconcerned about violating human rights. Even though the “Kuala Lumpur Joint Statement” dated 26 October 2025 clearly outlined the release of the captured soldiers, the Thai side continues to present excuses, refusing to release them and violating the agreement by using many improper and unfounded reasons against Cambodia.

Continuing to use the landmine explosion excuse:

Thailand claims that a landmine exploded in the disputed area and demands the withdrawal of heavy weapons and joint demining operations as conditions for release. This excuse is seen as an intentional delay aimed at applying military and diplomatic pressure on Cambodia.

National security excuse:

The detention has been used to show Thailand’s firmness in protecting its sovereignty during a time of internal political crisis, turning a humanitarian issue into a political tool. The refusal to release the soldiers is a clear violation of the spirit and content of the joint statement, which is the highest-level peace agreement between the two countries.

In the context where this humanitarian conflict has dragged on into December 2025, Thailand is the host of the 33rd SEA Games. The SEA Games are considered a symbol of unity, friendship, and peace in Southeast Asia. As Cambodia must decide whether to participate or not, the situation becomes a significant opportunity—like a mirror reflecting Thailand’s wrongful and dishonest actions.

If Cambodia decides to withdraw and not send its sport delegation to participate in the SEA Games in Thailand, it would be an appropriate response to Thailand’s violation of human rights, illegal detention of Cambodian soldiers, and breach of agreements. Such a response would show the world clearly that Thailand is violating its commitments and failing to respect high-level diplomatic agreements, even on simple humanitarian matters.

A sporting event held under the spirit of peace and progress cannot achieve its intended image when the host country continues to detain Cambodian soldiers in clear violation of peace obligations with its neighboring country.

Thailand’s decision to impose conditions on the release of the captured soldiers is an action that violates human rights and undermines the value of diplomatic agreements. If Cambodia participates with Thailand, it would mean helping Thailand display a polished image through the SEA Games. However, Cambodia’s non-participation or raising this issue at a high level would become a significant question posed by international media to the Thai government:

“How can a country host a regional peace event while unlawfully detaining captured soldiers and failing to honor its commitments under the Kuala Lumpur Agreement?”

Reasons Cambodia should not participate (or should withdraw):

The decision not to participate in the 33rd SEA Games is not merely a loss in sports, but a golden opportunity to apply effective international pressure on Thailand and gain diplomatic and moral advantage.

1. Global political attention

The world—especially international journalists covering the SEA Games—will immediately focus on Cambodia’s reason for withdrawal.

2. Exposing Thailand’s dishonesty

This will damage Thailand’s image as a peace-hosting nation. Cambodia’s message should be clear:

“Peace in the region is not just a sports slogan; it is a humanitarian obligation.”

3. Pressure from ASEAN countries

ASEAN members participating in the Games will be pressured to show their stance on Thailand's violations of the Kuala Lumpur Agreement, an agreement facilitated by ASEAN itself.

4. Uplifting national dignity

Cambodia will demonstrate that it is ready to sacrifice sporting prestige to defend human rights and national sovereignty.

To maintain its dignity as an ASEAN member and ensure the unity of the 33rd SEA Games, the Thai government has the obligation to release all 18 Cambodian soldiers immediately and unconditionally. As a Cambodian citizen:

I call upon both domestic and international communities, especially the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) and the Southeast Asian Games Federation (SEAGF), to pay attention to this humanitarian issue and urge the Thai government to honor its peace commitments and international obligations so that the 33rd SEA Games do not become a historical record that harms its future reputation or leaves bitterness for future generations of Thai people.

This article expresses the analytical perspective and personal reflection of the author in the spirit of protecting national interests. If readers find it valuable and beneficial to the nation, please share widely. If there are any mistakes or content that may affect Cambodia’s image, I respectfully accept all guidance without conditions.
