Thailand Adopts a Policy of Setting the Border Ablaze to Preserve Power in the Capital

Thailand Adopts a Policy of  Setting the Border Ablaze to Preserve Power in the Capital

The situation in Thailand is not merely a routine democratic procedural change; rather, it is a dangerous power game that is using the nation’s fate as political capital. The decision to dissolve parliament this Friday marks the opening move of a new political strategy by Mr. Anutin Charnvirakul, who is currently cornered.

Prime Minister Anutin’s request for the King to dissolve parliament did not arise from confidence, but from an attempt to escape defeat within parliament. His minority government failed to amend the constitution to expand its power and is now facing intense pressure. Therefore, dissolving parliament is the only “emergency exit” available to avoid collapse through a parliamentary vote and to shift the battlefield to a general election within the next 60 days.

The most alarming issue is the linkage of the border conflict with Cambodia to the election campaign. Reports indicate that clashes have resulted in approximately 20 deaths, and the situation along the border is heating up. Analysts observe that Mr. Anutin is playing the “nationalism card” by escalating military tensions to portray himself as a strong leader defending national territory. This is a classic strategy: “creating an external enemy to unify internal votes,” aimed at benefiting his Bhumjaithai Party.

This political strategy is further damaging Thailand’s already fragile economy (with growth at only 1.2%). Border closures and rising tensions have caused exports to Cambodia to plunge by as much as 67%, severely impacting Thai traders themselves. Moreover, the risk of losing millions of Cambodian migrant workers could paralyze Thailand’s industrial sector. Thailand’s stock market, now one of the worst performers in the world, stands as clear evidence that investors have lost confidence in this political gamble.

The United States, under the leadership of President Donald Trump, is becoming an increasingly dissatisfied key player. The ceasefire that Mr. Trump once boasted as his achievement is now being undermined. If Mr. Anutin continues to exploit conflict for electoral gain, the Trump administration may impose economic measures, including tariffs, against Thailand. An urgent phone conversation between the two leaders indicates that the situation has reached a critical red line.

Mr. Anutin is playing the most perilous game of all. He is seeking short-term political victory at the cost of economic stability and regional peace. For Thailand, this represents a triple crisis: internal political instability, economic turmoil, and the risk of a full-scale war with a neighboring country.
