Cambodia Contains Anger by Requesting ASEAN Investigation into Thai Shooting Incident
The tension along the Cambodia-Thailand border escalated once again on Sunday afternoon, December 7, 2025, following the firing of heavy weapons by the Thai military onto Cambodian forces. According to a press release by Her Excellency Lieutenant General Mali Socheata, Undersecretary of State and Spokesperson for the Ministry of National Defense, Kingdom of Cambodia, the incident occurred at approximately 14:15 PM at the Preah Lean Thmor area, in Choam Ksan District, Preah Vihear Province.
The report clearly stated that the Thai military used several types of guns, including handguns, B40 machine guns, and 60mm mortars in this firing operation, which constitutes a serious violation of the existing ceasefire agreement. Despite the use of armed force against its troops, Cambodia chose strategic restraint, with forces on the ground not returning fire. Instead, Cambodian forces immediately contacted the Thai side to request a cessation of the shooting, and the firing ended at 14:32 PM.
Cambodia’s decision not to return fire is a key point that reflects the Royal Government's firm stance on maintaining peace and adhering to the principle of resolving disputes through peaceful means, in line with international law. Simultaneously, Cambodia took immediate diplomatic action by informing the ASEAN Observer Team (AOT) about the incident.
Furthermore, the Ministry of National Defense plans to request the AOT to conduct a proper and transparent investigation to seek the truth and ensure justice. By appealing to this international mechanism, Cambodia wishes to demonstrate that it absolutely rejects any threat or use of force and remains highly committed to adhering to the conditions of the bilateral peace agreement.
The situation along the border remains under the utmost careful monitoring while awaiting further developments from the ASEAN side.
