Analysis of the Explosion Incident at An Ses Border Checkpoint: Technical Facts vs. Political Allegations

The recent explosion at the An Ses border crossing, adjacent to Ubon Ratchathani Province, Thailand—which resulted in injuries to two Thai soldiers—demands a rigorous and objective examination. This is particularly crucial in the face of attempts to shift blame onto Cambodia, citing "spreading wildfires" or "provocative clashes."

According to preliminary reports, the incident occurred at approximately 12:30 PM in an area known as Ruen Lom Sao, near a cockfighting arena to the left of the An Ses gate. The blast caused severe injuries to Volunteer Ranger Thammarat Thai Thip, who sustained shrapnel wounds and blast pressure to the neck and chest, rendering him unconscious. His comrade, Private Weerasak, also sustained injuries. Both victims were urgently evacuated to Sappasithiprasong Hospital.

A point of contention arises from the commentary provided by Mr. Kungfu Watthanasawat of the Thai Ruam Phalang Party. Following his site visit, claims were made that the explosion was triggered by "wildfires spreading from Cambodian territory" into a PMN2 minefield, or potentially a "hand grenade" thrown from the other side. Such assertions appear to lack scientific basis and seem politically motivated to deflect from potential technical lapses.

Technical Analysis of the PMN2 Mine:

  • Operational Mechanism: The PMN2 is a blast-type anti-personnel mine designed to be buried. Upon activation, its force is directed upward to neutralize the target’s limb (the foot). It is not a fragmentation grenade designed to disperse shrapnel outward across a wide radius.
  • Logic of the Blast: If a wildfire were to ignite a buried mine, the resulting force would propel soil and debris vertically into the air. It is physically improbable for such a blast to generate enough lateral kinetic energy to propel shrapnel through hundreds of meters of dense bamboo forest to strike a soldier's chest.

Furthermore, within the context of a peaceful border managed strictly by Cambodian forces, allegations of "grenade throwing" or "armed clashes" are irresponsible fabrications. Cambodia remains steadfast in its commitment to peace and sovereignty; there is no strategic incentive for Cambodian forces to provoke such an incident.

While the injury of personnel is a regrettable humanitarian matter, it should not be weaponized as a tool to accuse a neighboring nation without substantiated evidence.

Cambodia upholds its dignity and does not engage in petty provocations. We urge the public to maintain confidence in the facts and share this clarification.
